「The Rookery」
The Rookery
The Rookery documents Guryong Village, South Korea’s largest informal settlement, hidden within Seoul’s Gangnam district. Established during the housing crisis surrounding the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the village became home to displaced workers, bankrupt entrepreneurs, and abandoned elderly residents living without official addresses or government services.
Today, Guryong Village faces demolition as redevelopment plans move forward. Amid recent fires and growing uncertainty, this project seeks to preserve the stories, lives, and resilience of a community existing on the margins of modern Korean society before it disappears.
本プロジェクトのタイトルは「ルーカリー（The Rookery）」である。かつてこの言葉は、19世紀の都市における過密なスラムを指した。本作で扱うのは、ソウル江南区・開浦洞に位置する九龍村である。都市の中心にありながら地図に現れにくいこの場所は、1988年のオリンピック期の住宅不足の中で形成された。そこには、社会の周縁に押し出された人々が、正式な住所を持たないまま暮らしている。現在、再開発により立ち退きが進み、さらに原因不明の火災がその痕跡を消しつつある。私は、この消えゆく風景と人々の存在を記録し、都市の外側にあるもう一つの現実を可視化しようと試みている。
