In the year of 2018 I travelled with my parents to meet with their friends who were kind enough to take us to an unknown location, not frequented by foreigners, called Baguio, about 6 hours from Manila. When I arrived there as a normal Japanese high school student, it was a bit of a culture shock to see some things that were absolutely normal for Filipinos. 

For instance, I saw the local profanes shoved an indigenous inspired hat to the horse's face. To me it felt like a toxicity however non of the people around it felt anything but laughter. On our way to travel there, we stumbled across a group of police officers doing a music performance for the motion of their safe driving which was disturbing considering that it’s at the resting place in the highway. As I adventure through the city I realized that the difference between the people of life style is mesmerizing experience that without the photograph it would be challenging to imagine what the experience would be. 

The expression in the photos that I took of everyday people’s lifestyles made me realize I had a passion about photography. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to display due to the negative feedback that I received regarding it at that time. But I have decided to continue with the passion, learn from inspiration of others, and improve myself in the story of the photography. 

2018年、両親と一緒にフィリピンへ行って、両親の友人に会いに行った。そこで、あまり外国人が行かないような場所「バギオ」という街に連れて行ってもらった。マニラから車で6時間くらいかかって、行くまではどんな場所なのか全然知らなかった。

実際に行ってみると、日本で普通に生活していた自分にとっては、いろんな場面がカルチャーショックだった。たとえば、観光客の一人が馬に先住民族風の帽子を無理やりかぶせてて、それを見てすごく違和感を感じた。自分にはちょっと乱暴で、動物に対しての扱いとして良くないように思えたけど、周りの人たちは笑っていて、まるでそれが普通のことみたいだった。

バギオへ向かう途中、ハイウェイの休憩所では警察官たちが音楽パフォーマンスをしていた。でも、そのせいで車の通行が不安定になっていて、「本当に警察がやるべきことなのかな」と少し不安になった。

でも、そんな出来事も含めて、街を歩きながらいろんな人の生活を見ていると、それがすごく面白くて、どんどん惹き込まれていった。文化の違いって、見ているだけで発見があるし、写真がなかったら自分の体験をちゃんと伝えるのは難しいとも感じた。
その時に、自分の中に「写真が好きだ」という気持ちがあることに気づいた。日常の中にある表情や瞬間を残すことで、自分だけの視点や物語を記録できるのが面白かった。ただ、当時は周りから写真について否定的な意見をもらったこともあって、自信をなくしてしまっていた。

それでも今は、もう一度ちゃんと向き合って、自分の好きなことを続けたいと思ってる。いろんな人の作品から刺激を受けながら、少しずつでも自分の写真の世界を深めていきたい。
